Jo/Laurie: Sexy Times for Sex
This is just a short, though hopefully still funny, fic I whipped up at the last minute as I thought about Penelo, who is certainly one of the cutest yet least fleshed-out characters in the Final Fantasy XII universe. And so, in a fit of madness, I decided to try and make her as much of a real person as much as possible... and this little bit of fluff and madness resulted. Don't ask me why, people... it's the result of my unconsciousness and you know how little control I exert over that part of my anatomy. ;) There may be a chapter for Larsa or Vaan appearing soon... but I can make no promises now!

This is especially dedicated to [info]naviechance, because her Penelo still rocks my socks off months after the fact. Here's to a bit of mid-January cheer, everyone!

Title: 20 Spells Cast From a Still Untested Staff
Fandom: Final Fantasy XII
Series: The Uses of Enchantment
Pairings: Hints at Penelo X Vaan and Penelo X Larsa
Rating: PG
Summary: She once killed a man in Rabanastre, just to watch him die... A list of 20 random things that Penelo has said and done by the middle of her first world changing adventure.

Penelo:

1. Has always thought that all the princess in the fairy tales she heard as a child were hopelessly stupid. She had grown up wanting to be all their fairy guardians instead. At least they kicked some righteous ass on occasion, instead of standing around waiting for some ridiculously perfect prince to come save them.

2. Somehow grew up to be a damsel in distress herself somewhere down the line, much to her own consternation. Though at least her knight-in-shining armor turned out to be much cuter than she ever thought possible.

3. Is both in awe of and terrified by Lady Ashe, mostly because she seems as though she would not hesitate to stick her sword right through someone’s eye if they squinted at her hard enough.

4. Likes fire. Likes it a lot. To the point where Vaan still freaks out when he sees a case of matches around her.

(And to think-- everyone thought she was always the responsible one.)

5. Is a lot tougher than she looks. Even though she’s barely 5 bloody feet in height and still prays nightly for a growth spurt.

6. Knows that she’s not going to be the leading lady of the current story and is already reconciled to the fact. There’s time enough for all that later, after all.

7. Mostly resented her brother (who almost single-handedly raised her) when he was alive and desperately misses him now.

8. Is best friends with the most witless, tactless and hopeless twit in all of Ivalice, despite her own good sense. And loves him more than anything else still existing on this earth.

9. Actually enjoys shaking her (literal) money maker at the Muthru Bazaar. It keeps her in shape and gets her better tips than being a shop girl ever could.

Besides, dealing with all the perverts who think that they’re entitled to pinch her squishy parts because they had too much to drink really honed her right hook.

10. Already has pinged onto the fact that her new friend, Lord Larsa, might like her more than any of his rod-up-the-rear advisors would like.

(Though of course, the fact that he keeps falling to one knee and pledging to be her protector as long as she needs one was a bit of a give away. Even Vaan had noticed that, for the love of Occuria.)

11. And secretly gloats juuuust a little bit about it, even if it is only a crush that’ll fade in time. After all, not every girl can boast a son of an emperor as an admirer… even if he was a bit pint-sized right now.

12. Once killed a man in Rabanastre, just to watch him die.

(All right, not really, but the jerk had been asking for a come-uppance after stealing money from the local orphan’s charity pot. And having to dodge the wave of guards trying to figure our who sent out that fire spell that burnt off his eyebrows was pretty funny at the time.)

13. Always gives money to that weird little kid that asks for one gil to recite a bit of local history. She knows what it’s like to be young and hungry, after all.

14. Talked back to her Bangaa kidnappers mostly because she figured that if she was going to die, she might as well go out with a bang. Possibly, this was due to the fact that she had been friends with Vaan for far too long. She was young and innocent and it wasn’t her fault.

15. Lied in that last part. In the end, she had chosen to do just what she wanted to. And no orphan of Dalmasca stays innocent for long.

16. Never thought she’d be saved by a prince with pretty hair, silly tights and boots with alarmingly high heels.

But then, Larsa always was an early bloomer.

17. Secretly is fond of the idea of one day being a sky pirate, if only because it would help keep Vaan out of trouble. He couldn’t find his arse with an atlas and has no idea of what to do in a bazaar. Left to his own devices, even if he could locate treasure in the first place, he’d barely be able to make adventuring pay off afterwards.

18. Rather enjoys her self-appointed role as her party’s medic and is already experimenting with creating a powerful, potentially ground-breaking piece of magic that would automatically bring a person back from the brink of unconsciousness. If nothing else, it would make her occasional-- and very ill advised, not that that ever stopped them!-- drinking contests with Vaan that much more fun.

19. Often wonders why Archadians seem to hold onto some obscure hierarchy of frilliness (their current emperor looks like he’s wearing a ruffled bathrobe, for god’s sake) and if Vayne ultimately turned evil because he didn’t get to dress like a cream puff as a child.

(Thankfully, this was certainly not a mistake being made with Larsa. Which is good, since the idea of a Larsa gone mad, bad and dangerous to know seriously makes pain radiate out between her eyes.)

20. Really, really, really likes the idea of one day saving the world.

(Which is even better because at this rate, if her little party doesn't end up dying some hideously ironic death at the hands of nethicite-crazed villains, that was just what might end up happening after all.)

---

Bonus: Just because so many people liked it so much... cream-puff!Vayne is at your service at last.

Loved number three, mainly because Ashe has become one of the tanks in my party.

Ashe is indeed one of the most awesome fighters in the entire game, though I admit to using Basch as my tank and main physical ass-kicker. She's pretty awesome as the paladin sort, though-- I just put on a mix of magical and heavy armor and watch her blaze a trail through any enemies I encounter. XD

I'm thrilled that you liked her worldliness! That was just what I was going for, since I really can't see how anyone was orphaned at 14 and more or less had to fend for themselves and their teenaged friend in a city occupied by a hostile empire could be all that naive or dreamy.

(Um, unless they're Vaan, I suppose. But he's... well, he's a special case, after all! ;)

I admire a mixture of strength and weakness in a person and I think there's some genuine steel beneath Penelo's girly exterior!

Oh, you! Your summary, it is indeed misleading! Here I was, expecting a mildly depressing ficlet, and I found this, which has sent me into an incurable fit of giggles! ♥ Very well done :D

Oh dear, I didn't mean for that summary to be so deceptive. But I'm glad you enjoyed it (and giggled! &hearts) regardless.

And pyromaniac!Penelo might very well become the future terror of all of Ivalice! It'll be up to Larsa to distract her with his sexy future manliness other things.

Well... at least he grew up to be a cool power-hungry bad-ass. Better to do it with a flourish than not at all!

And I feel this way because I'm totally going to write some evil, evil fic based on Vayne and Penelo's highly hypothetical, entirely wrong relationship in the future. I am evil, no? XD
[info]mimi_sardinia wrote:

This is true, evil goes better with cool and good-looking. The problem then is regreting that one has to kill the evil.

Sounds naughty. ;)
[info]mariagoner wrote:

Don't you hate it when evil is so awesome you don't want to kill it?

(And by hate, of course, I mean love. Vayne and Al-Cid are some of the most effective and awesome FF villians ever!)

I might have to bump the rating up to NC-17. And trust me, it will so!
[info]mimi_sardinia wrote:
Jan. 10th, 2007 09:47 am (UTC)
Oh yes, given that I'm a Sephiroth fangirl of old, I know the regret of awsome evil killing. Plus I am coming to a strong conclusion that Vayne comes in a close second in my favourite characters in FFXII - right after Larsa.

(Al-Cid? Do you mean Dr. Cid there? I haven't actually played the game yet but I got the idea Al-Cid - fop that he may be - is a the good side.)

The higher the rating the better!
[info]mariagoner wrote:

I have to reluclantly admit to never being able to beat Sephiroth-- even after I pummeled him with Knights of the Roung materia twice! He's probably the coolest of the old(er) school Final Fantasy villian but I'll always have a grudge against him because of that. XD

And I find Vayne terribly thrilling as a villian and not just because his voice is liquid sex either, I swear! It's clear from the first moment we saw him that he's intelligent-- devilishly intelligent-- yet his actions are undeniably evil (killing your relatives for power? not cool!) and his motives are so slippery, I find him nearly impossible to pin down. He's an enigma wrapped in a riddle and I find it terribly sad more fic isn't written about him.

Yes, I meant Dr. Cid! I've never seen an evil Cid before and the fact that he's the father of one of the coolest characters in the game makes him all the more awesome. XD

I found Seph easy, but then I took on the WEAPONs beforehand and optional megabosses like then are always harder than the final boss anyway - it's all a matter of having a good materia setup (which in itself can be a pain to do, because it means mastering the materia needed for your favourite team).

Unless you are talking about KH2 Sephiroth - he is the optional megaboss and the idea of fighting him gives me the wibblies (I stalled in KH2, quite early too).

I recently finished a really good Vayne-centred fic by [info]manic_intent that actually cast him as the mastermind behind practically everything that happened in the game, in an effort to free the world of somewhat cruel masters (meaning the Occuria). If you're interested, the last chapter aught to be easy to find, and has an index of the other chapters. It's primary pairing is Vayne/Gabranth though.

There is definately something cool about having a Cid who's a bad guy! Extra points definately for paternity too!
[info]mariagoner wrote:

If I ended up getting my ass kicked by Seph in the KH games (which I gave up on during the SECOND boss fight of the FIRST game I suck so, so bad! XD), it would be almost dignified. But no... I never could beat him as the final boss of FF VII.

Stupid, stupid, stupid one-winged angel. ::is still irrationally angry at that::

And I'll definitely have to catch up with manic_intent's series! I actually did read a bit of her work at the beginning... and then she started updating with huuuuuuuge chapters every day for a month straight (and I thought I was prolific!) and I sort of lost track of where I was reading up to. I'm not really that into slash, but if the writing of piece is good, I don't mind it either.

BTW, do you mind if I friend you now...? This is one of the most interesting conversations on FFXII I've gotten involved in so far!

I've always liked reading 20 facts/random things mainly because we get to see the little details in their everyday lives. I am a sucker for such, you see. This is no exception of course. :D

Lied in that last part. In the end, she had chosen to do just what she wanted to. And no orphan of Dalmasca stays innocent for long.

In a lot of ways this describes Penelo perfectly; Rabanastre slums isn't exactly a walk in the park, I would think. She's still naive in certain aspects (as seen in the game with some of her interactions with Balthier, Fran and, yes, Larsa), but I can definitely see her very street smart (at least much more so than Vaan, hah!).

Really, really, really likes the idea of one day saving the world.

I would have really, really liked that if that was truly in canon. *Sigh*

Keep building ^_^
[info]mariagoner wrote:

I love reading fics from the 20 facts meme as well, if only because it's so interesting to see the very distinct ways people sometimes have in visualizing characters! Not to mention, there's so much room for individual variation in this fandom, considering how lightly sketch some of the characters are. I really wish more people would write 20 facts fic for this fandom... but c'est la vie.

I'm incredibly happy to hear that you think I described Penelo perfectly! &hearts Penelo is an adorable mixture of the tough and the naive in the game itself-- I love how she can yell at Vaan for being a total idiot at one point while gasping at Al Cid's corny come-ons to Ashe at another. XD

Penelo might seem like an innocent sweet heart, but I'm pretty sure she's got nerves of steel beneath that smile...

Keep building ^_^

I will! Your gift!fic is going up by the end of the week, after all... ;)

Loooove it! I'm a new fan, so hi. :D And I have to ask one MAJOR question that has almost nothing to do with this fic.

Do you really think he's wearing heels? And are they wedges, like I seem to think? *peering at the artwork* I'm cosplaying as him, and while I'm short, I'm nowhere near as short as he is... so heels = taller = bad. D: XD

Hi, welcome to my LJ! It's always nice to meet new people-- especially ones that actually tolerate my futzing around in fandom. ;)

And ooh, the idea of Larsa cosplay sounds awesome! As for whether or not he actually has heels... well, if you look at some screencaps of him from the actual game, it honestly does look like he has little red heels at the end of his boot. But judging from official art of him, his boots are meant to be flats. In the end, I think it's safe to say that you can make his boots look like whatever you'd like, as long as you kept the same general color scheme.

Forgot to mention, but I ADORE your writing style - even have me writing stuff of my own again! (Though not FFXII stuff - Last Exile stuff XD)

I've seen a few shots from behind where it looks like he's wearing cherry red shoes with gold wedges, and green and gold on top of that. XDDDD I think I'm going to do gold shoes with red and green details, though. Hmmm... This little boy is going to kill me with all that detail. XD

OH. And I'm putting in my two cents that you sosoSO need to keep working on In the Hour Ahead of Us. It makes me happy. :D XD

::blush:: Oh mein gott, that has to be one of the biggest compliments anyone ever gave me about my fanfic! Mind dropping me a link to your work? ;)

And given how intricate his costume is, making it must be murder! BTW, have you seen Digitallica's (http://digitallica.deviantart.com/gallery/) Larsa cosplay? It is nothing short of awesome. And I'd love to see what you have up your sleeves about Larsa's costume later. &hearts

And as for Hour... two weeks, that's all I ask you to wait. ;)

As soon as the first part is beta'd and up, of course! I'm working enough backstory in that SOME of it is understandable to non-fans of the series. XD

Wow, that is good! I'm planning on hurting myself to get as accurate as possible - down to making the shoulder things out of raised pleather. XDDD But I dunno if I'll actually be able to pull it off like she has. :D

Oooo. >:3 I'm all atwitter now!
